About the Club

Founded in 1969 by Brian Leach and others, the Greenville Griffins are one of the top rugby teams in the Southeast. However, the Griffins are more than just a top-notch rugby team they promote and take care of their sport.

After their playing days, several Griffin Old Boys are continuing to contribute to the growth of our sport. Mike Cobb who played with Greenville throughout the 80s and early 90s, is now the chairman of the Southeast Referee Society. Parker Carlisle Griffin club president in 1997, is also a referee.

In 1998 another former Griffin club president, John Roberts, founded the Furman men's and women's rugby teams, which he currently coaches. Several past and current team members have served as assistant coaches to the Furman team.

The Griffins also work hard in the community. Twice a year our club picks up trash along East North Street Greenville as part of the "adopt-a-highway" program. We also have worked with Communities in Schools, a Greenville non-profit agency that mentors at-risk youth. We have treated these youngsters to a game, rugby "exercises" and a hot dog lunch. Also, several of our current players and old boys are active in coaching and teaching rugby to our local youth through the SC High School Rugby Union. www.schsr.com

The Griffins are also a very strong social club. We work hard on the pitch and play hard afterwards – at post game parties, club parties, and informal gatherings anywhere at anytime. We’re a close group where friendships are made for lifetime.
