Griffins VS Columbia L12-29

Greenville traveled to Columbia Saturday the 7th for what always is a hard fought game between two fiercely competitive teams. The game started at the usual high pace with the ball moving through phases and the packs fighting for dominance. An early turnover in a ruck caught Columbia by surprise and saw Joel break down the blind and beat two for an impressive solo try. Columbia fought back and managed to pull ahead with some great loose forward work, which resulted in two well-worked tries. Greenville evened things up with some good tackling and rucking, which freed the ball and allowed Brett in for the easy score. The match was played in good spirits and in the end Columbia pulled away with some excellent backline plays.

Greenville Griffins VS Atlanta Renegades B

Well what a lovely day it was for Rugby Saturday.  It started out a nice cool 61 degrees and the lovely rain appeared for the second half.  It was the first game of the Griffins season and there was a good sprinkling of new blood in the line-up.  We ended up running 4 quarters and were allowed to use rolling subs which allowed us to get a lot of the new guys some good gametime and some great experience.  We had a squad of 22 out there Saturday with 8 guys donning the Griffins jersey for the first time.

Great meeting last night

Great to see everyone out at the pre-season meeting last night.  Great to see those new faces out there as well.  we covered the upcoming schedule, practices, the club account and the officer elections for 2009/2010. two tentative games have been added to the schedule which is an away game to kickoff the season down in Myrtle Beach on September 19 and then a possible league game at the end of the season down in Columbia on November 7.  So I'll get that updated schedule out to everyone tomorrow.
The coaches talked a bit about the practices which we are changing up a bit for this season to make sure we keep things fresh and also keep us developing our game.  We have also added a couple of more difficult opponents this fall which will keep us playing at a high tempo.  It should be a fun season.
We kick off practices next week on Tuesday Sept. 1 and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00-9:00pm out at Monaghan park. Lets all try and get there on time so we can get going at 7:00pm on the nose.

The officers elected for the year are:
Dan Roberts
Joel Hedge
Tim Biven
Chris Fallow

Michael Honeycutt
Brett Van Der Merwe

Spring Season Write-up

Well Greenville headed into the Spring Season with a fairly new squad.  The Fall season had it's highs and it's lows but the key with the spring season was going to be consistency of play and within the squad which has been our Achilles heel in the past.  The first week in January was our first spring practice.  A cold time of year to start to say the least. We had a few new faces in the squad and several seasoned campaigners.  We practiced well, dropped a scrimmage to Clemson and headed into our first league game against Cape Fear on the road.
