About The Club

Founded in the early 1970s, the Greenville Griffins are one of the top rugby teams in the Southeast. But Griffins are more than just a top-notch rugby team, they promote and take care of the their sport.

After their playing days, several Griffin Olde Boys are continuing to contribute to the growth of our sport. Mike Cobb who played with Greenville throughout the 80s and early 90s, is now the chairman of the Southeast Referee Society. Parker Carlisle, Griffin club president in 1997, is also a referee.

In 1998 another former Griffin club president, John Roberts, founded the Furman men's and women's rugby teams, which he currently coaches. Roger LeCroy, Jason Potter, Mark Sullivan and Joe Young, all former Griffins, have served as assistant coaches to the Furman team.

The Griffins also work hard in the community. Twice a year our club picks up trash along East North Street in Greenville as part of the "adopt-a-highway" program. We also have a strong relationship with Communities in Schools, a Greenville non-profit agency the mentors at-risk youth. Once a year our club treats these youngsters to game, rugby "exercises" and a hot dog lunch.

The Griffins are also a strong social club. We work hard on the pitch and play hard afterwards – at post game parties, Greenville Grrrowl Hockey games or informal gatherings anywhere. We’re a close group where friendships are made for lifetime.
