Greenville win division
with 49-15 road win against Cape Fear
April 3, 2007 -- Well, everyone new the importance of this game
going into it. We hadn't played a meaningful game in 4 weeks
and the practices had been far from stellar. All we needed to
do was win and we secured the number one spot in our group and
a home quarter final against Knoxville. What ensued was a resounding
win on the road and a big confidence boost going into our last
regular season game.
Conditions were perfect, sunny, mid 70's, not too humid, even the fatboys couldn't complain about this one. Game started off strong. Greenville were going to have to dominate up front to set the platform for our backs to spring. We pressured well early. But every chance Cape Fear got they looked to spin it wide where they made some strong in roads to our half. Some resolute tackling by our back three snuffed out a couple of certain Fear tries. We worked our way back down the field and were awarded a scrum 10 yards out. Roberts picked up at #8 and drew in the would be tacklers to feed Dutch who danced around a couple of defenders to score near the posts. Mulli converted 7-0. A nice start. Fear worked the ball back down the field by regaining the kickoff, which is one area Fear dominated Greenville in. We have to secure kickoff ball. Greenville were penalized in front of the posts and Fear slotted the penalty for a 7-3 score line. Greenville again worked down the field. The pack were gaining ascendency in the scrums, and when Bucci knocked on at the goalline we knew we could steal the ball. The Greenville pack pushed Fear off their own ball and Roberts picked off the back to score. Conversion unsuccessful, 12-3. After several phases back and forth, Greenville found the, selves with a scrum on the Fear 22. Brett took the scrum ball and danced through several defenders to feed Matty with a score under the posts, conversion good 19-3. We went a sleep for the last 10 minutes of the half thinking we were going to run away with it. Fear launched a 22 into our half and some confusion by the back 3 allowed the ball to bounce awkardly and Fear chased and were awarded a penalty at the ensuing ruck. Fear kicked for touch and at the next lineout the pack fell asleep and allowed Fear to maul the ball within 5 yards of our line, they spun it and crashed throuhg the middle to score under the posts. Try converted, 19-10 and it was halftime.
Second half started and we knew whoever scored next would start the half with a ton of momentum. We picked up right where we left off the first half. After being held up over th eline the greenville pack again pushed Fear off there own ball and Florian ponced on the ball to score. That was exactly what we needed and we preceeded to play the game in their half with further tries coming from, Brett, Mulli and Bucci. We outscored Fear 30-5 in the second half to bring the final score to Greenville 49 - Cape Fear 15. A thoroughly great day of rugby and a rsounding win that sets the tone going into our final game against Augusta and our home quarter final against Knoxville.
The afternoon was capped off by a very competitive B-sdide game which Fear one. We were then treated to the glorious spectacle of Tim "I'm a grower not a shower" Biven and Seth "Testes Satchel" McCullen doing their Zulu around the Fear pitch.
A very good win this weekend lets see everyone out at practice this week to get ready for another hard road game against Augusta.
