Griffins Drop 1st Matrix
Match Of The Season
March 7, 2007 -- This past Saturday the Greenville Griffins
hit the road for a crucial showdown with the second ranked team
in their matrix bracket the Charleston Outlaws. With an impressive
22 - 0 victory against Charleston at home to open the 2007 matrix
season the Griffins knew that they would be facing a hungry
Outlaws side in the rematch in Charleston.
As with any close match in rugby there is always something that could be
said by the loosing team about focus, desire, preparation, and
execution. Numerous wrong options were taken, bad passing was abundant,
tackles were missed, penalties were surrendered, and kicks at goal that
normally fly true did not. At the end of the day the simple truth is
that the Griffins failed to play up to their full potential and it cost
them the match.
On the bright side of things the Griffins did manage to paint the town
Green on Saturday night and they will have two weeks to go back to the
drawing board to sharpen their skills before facing the bottom of the
table Camp LJ side at home. With the narrow 16 - 13 loss the Griffins
fall backwards into a first place tie with the Outlaws at the top of the
matrix table. As per the bylaws of the matrix competition the Griffins
will remain in control of their own destiny by virtue of the advantage
that they hold over the Outlaws in the head to head points differential
(+19 for the Griffins).
With the smell of blood in the water after their first loss
of the matrix season the Griffins will need to remain calm to
see their way home safely. Knowing that two out of their three
remaining matches against Camp LJ, Cape Fear, and Augusta are
on the road the Griffins are in the ideal situation to prove
to everyone that they belong a the top of the matrix table.
