Well a hard loss this past weekend. It was definitely a game Charleston deserved to win. As we were driving down throuh the rain I was thinkiong it was going to be a wet and messy game instead we were greeted by stifling 92 degree 100% humidity playing conditions. This definitely played a key factor in our performance Saturday as our fitness was not where it needs to be for where we want to play the game. We started out weathering a Charleston onslaught from the whistle. We started slow as usual, and had to repulse their repeated attack on our goal line for about the first 5-10 minutes. We defended well and moved the ball down the field. The first try came through repeated phases of attack and recycling the ball just as we had practiced. Scott Lindsay finally was the one to break the Charleston Defence and dot down under the posts. Conversion by Mulli. Next kickoff was taken by Philip Fuller up hard and we set it well and started to march down the field. We won the ensuing lineout (only 1 of very few that we won) and spun the ball out, Gimp took the ball at pace and hurtled down the field for about 50 meters before being stopped just short of the line. The ensuing scrum we swung it and TJ managed to dot down. Mulli converted. From here we fell asleep. At the next kickoff we left Matt Myers totally isolated. 8 Charleston forwards came barreling down on him and won the ball. They eventually marched down and scored in the corner. Charleston also were the next to score before we came back with some more strong play and managed to put TJ away again. This was the last of our good play. From here we just all seemed to lose our legs. Charleston repeatedly broke our first line of defence through some terrible first up tackling by us. They then had 4 players in support who could take the support pass and they managed to score a total of 6 tries against us. We managed to come back in the 2nd half with some consistent play that was rewarded with a Mike May try which Mulli converted. However Charleston were the last to score. A hard first up game but I think we all learned valuable lessons. We now turn our attention to the Atlanta Renegades this weekend. It'll be a hard game so let's have everyone out for 2 solid practices this week.
